Alitalia, the national airline of Italy, has its headquarters based in Rome. Serving over 28 destinations in Italy and 74 destinations in other parts of the world, Alitalia has its prime hub at Leonardo Da Vinci International Airport in Rome, and Malpensa International Airport in Milan. Founded as Aerolinee Italiane Internazionali on 16th September, 1946, Alitalia began its services on 5th May, 1947 carrying more than 10,000 passengers. Alitalia started carrying about 25 million passengers every year by the 1990s. Alitalia founded its regional subsidiary Alitalia Express in 1997 and became a part of the SkyTeam Alliance in 2001. Alitalia declared that it would bring down 2,700 jobs by the coming three years to plan for a unification of Alitalia with Air France and KLM. Alitalia took possession of Gandalf Airlines for achieving extra slots at various European airports, chiefly in Paris and Milan in the month of April in 2004. After experiencing economic hardships on September 2004, Alitalia declared to dismiss 5000 employees and to divide the company into two parts, a ground service section and an airline. At present, Alitalia is under the ownership of Air France-KLM, Italian Ministry of the Treasury, various other shareholders and its employees. “Millemiglia” is the name of the frequent flyer program of Alitalia. Alitalia signed a contract with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines for a unification aiming at building up Malpensa hub with Amsterdam and also Rome Fiumicino. But the two airports in Milan, Milan Malpensa and Milan Rome failed to be served equally by Alitalia as the EU Airlines objected to it by putting forth various issues. So KLM discontinued the contract with Alitalia and it sold 2% of its share to Air France. In 2001 Alitalia became a division of the SkyTeam Alliance and reissued the contract of ground handling with SEA.
At present Alitalia serves numerous destinations across the world including Egypt, Libya, Ghana, Morocco, Nigeria and Tunisia in Africa, East Asia, South Asia, Southwest Asia in Asia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Russia, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Sweden, Spain and Turkey in Europe, Canada and United States in North America and Argentina, Venezuela and Brazil in South America. Alitalia operates scheduled flights between Malpensa International Airport in Milan and Logan International Airport in Boston, and also between Rome-Fiumicino Airport in Milan and Logan International Airport. In fact, Malpensa International Airport is one of the two prime hubs of Alitalia from where regular flights to Logan International Airport are operated by Alitalia.
