The national airline and the largest airline of Finland is Finnair, which has its headquarter based in Vantaa and its prime hub at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. Finnair was launched in 1923 as Aero O/Y by Ambassador Bruno Lucander, who had earlier headed the operations of Estonian airline Aeronaut. In 1923 Lucander signed a contract with Junkers Flugzeugwerke AG for having technical assistance and airliners for the recently launched Finnair against a 50% share. The agreement was signed on 12th September, 1923 in Helsinki and the company was registered on 11th December in 1923 and the first flights were operated between Helsinki and Tallinn. Due to the raids in Helsinki and other places in Finland, Finnair had to face problems and half of its fleet was taken over by the Finnish Air Force. The services of Finnair were re-started on 1st November 1947 to Europe.
The earliest trans-Atlantic services of Finnair to New York began on 15th May 1969. In 1983 it became the first airline company to operate non-stop flights to Japan from Western Europe. In 1997 Finnair took over Finnaviation and Kar-Air and received its official name of Finnair Oyj on 25th September 1997. Finnair became one of the members of the famous Oneworld Alliance in 1999. By engaging 9,447 employees on March 2007, Finnair at present has become the fifth oldest international airline.
