Lufthansa was established in Berlin on 6th January, 1926 after unification between "Junkers Luftverkehr" and "Deutsche Aero Lloyd". Originally called Deutsche Luft Hansa Aktiengesellschaft, Deutsche Lufthansa signed a contract with the Spanish government for the initiation of air service connecting the two countries. Investment for the launching of Iberia Airlines was a part of this contract.
Just before the commencement of World War II, Lufthansa emerged as one of the prime airline companies beginning services on routes to North Atlantic, South Atlantic and Far East. But with Germany’s downfall in 1945 Lufthansa stopped its service. Presently Lufthansa is owned by Deutsche Postbank, Deutsche Bank and MGL Gesellschaft fur Luftverkehrswerte with the total number of staffs being 37, 042 (2007 March).
